The weather for the second race day of the spring series was as beautiful as the weather for the first day was ugly.

The first race on March 25th was a cold and rainy day best fit for cleaning out the attic, watching sports on TV, or reorganizing ones paperclip collection; not for sailing. Fittingly only two boats showed up. One was the RC Whaler and the other, a Flying Scot, did not leave it’s trailer. All races used whistle starts.

The second race morning, April 15th forecast as clear, cool, with winds between 6 and 14 knots did not disappoint. The weather was in fact clear, comfortably cool with winds mostly out of the SW. With Ray and Jeff (both on IR) in the Whaler, five boat took to the water for a day of ideal sailing. We got in four races good races on a variety of different courses, with the last race finishing on a dying afternoon breeze.

After the boats were all tucked away, several participant retired to the CBSC Yacht Club (aka The Burbank Tavern) to rehydrate and tell a few well intentioned tall tales.

How could tax day have been better spent?

The third race of the CBSC spring series sailed five races under near perfect conditions. We set a new mark #3, located a bit upriver and farther away from the bank than the white mooring buoy used in the past. This made for a good reaching mark that was not the fleet scrambler of old.

We were lucky witness to the first sail of Gerry Wyatt’s new Montgomery 23. With a light blue lapstreak hull and long cabin top, the Montgomery 23 is an elegant tradition styled weekender. As the wind built a bit, the boat showed a good turn of speed while keeping the cockpit crew warn and dry.

The morning’s 3 races saw partly sunny skies, winds around 5 to 6 mph and shifty with a few gusts thrown in to keep thing interesting, and flat water. The medical recovery ward (Ray & Jeff) ran the races from the Whaler, changing the courses as wind, weather, and whim dictated. The starts were close, and the on course action made for some great racing. With the variable and shifty winds, no one could count on a finishing position until the line was crossed.

In the third race on the run to the finish, Doug and John were dead even all the way down the last leg, with the lead changing several times due to who got which puff first. At the finish, Doug edged out John by a mere 8 seconds. It does not get much better than this.

After a quick lunch break, we took to the water again as the weather started to deteriorate ahead of Saturday evening’s forecast stormy conditions. At Ray’s suggestion, we moved the start down to mark #4, leaving the old starting buoy as a short #2 windward mark.

As the wind piped up and the temperatures dropped under ever increasing cloudy skies, this new course configuration allowed for 2 good (and quick) races with a short beat up to mark #2 followed by a close reach to mark #3 and a broader reach into the finish at mark #4. Given the races were short and fast, starting was the key to success.

In the fourth race, Scott Chambers brought the RS500 flying across the line with a solid first place finish, besting most of the rest of the fleets finishing time by half. The fifth race saw less than 4 minutes between first and last.

If you missed the past two race weekends, you missed some mighty fine sailing. I hope you can join in for Spring Race #4 on May 6th.
