The 43rd running of the CBSC Desert Regatta was sailed over the weekend of June 8th and 9th on Lake Sacajawea at Charbonneau State Park, WA. A fleet of nine Flying Scots and one Buccaneer enjoyed some perfect June sailing weather. It was warm and sunny without being too hot. The winds on Saturday were blowing around 7 to 10 knots with gusts reaching up as high as 16 knots.
We sailed in four good races on Saturday; each on a different course. There was a postponement between the first and second races so a capsized boat could be recovered. It was quickly righted by our Cracker Jack support boat crew, towed to the dock, drained of water, and was back out, ready to go in a little over an hour.
The sailing resumed, with three more races being run on smooth water and good winds. The boats were on their trailers in time for folks to clean up a bit before heading over to the Mexican feast prepared by CBSC’s own Wanda Nelson. You can take it from this participant, it was some mighty fine eats and great conservation.
Sunday dawned just as the weather forecasters predicted. The same near perfect June weather with one important difference; the wind. As a high-pressure system moved through the area, it brought the same sunny and warm conditions as the day before, but without the wind. The 09:00 start was postponed until 11:00. By then it became clear there was not even going to the couple of knots of breeze eluded to by the forecast. The remaining races were abandoned.
After the trophy presentation, the out of towners got an early start on the trip home, and the locals got their boats put away, bringing to a close the 43rd running of the CBSC Desert Regatta.
