Sailors who participated in this year's 36th Annual Desert Regatta were greeted by warm, sunny weather with temperatures that reached 90 deg F by Saturday night. Sailors and crews started arriving late Friday afternoon to take advantage of available camp sites at scenic Charbonneau Park on the Snake River. The Skipper's Meeting held on Saturday was at 10 AM. The morning wind at the start of the 1st race was approximately 8 mph from the West. Throughout the day the wind velocity increased as high as 16 mph slowly shifting to South West. Variable wind shifts created an added challenge for race crews. The wind was consistent enough for the Race Committee to initiate 7 race starts for competing Flying Scot, Thistle, Multihull, and Monohull Portsmouth classes. The race course was set up using 4 turning marks that kept all boats between the Ice Harbor Dam on the West and the Charbonneau campground to the East. This overall race plan provided a manageable area for safety boats and crews and allowed for good coverage of the racing fleet. The sailing club safety crews were again joined this year by Columbia Basin Dive Rescue who provided the added support of 2 safety boats with crews for the 2 day event. Racing ended Saturday at 4 PM. After a long day of racing, the crews were able to relax and enjoy the Saturday night meal catered by Famous Dave's Barbeque Restaurant. Additional desserts were provided compliments of club members. The weather was ideal for camping, dry with a warm summer breeze. After a good night's sleep, racers gathered at their boats to prepare for the 9 AM Sunday morning race start. Early Sunday morning wind velocity was already clocking at 12 to 15 mph with a forecast that called for wind velocity increasing to 20-30 as the day progressed. After a race delay and increasing winds, the decision was made to abandon the formal racing for the day. Through good RC planning on Saturday and the impending high wind forecast for Sunday, the decision to complete a full 1st day of racing proved to be a good decision for all involved. On Sunday 2 Thistle and 2 multihull skippers chose to go out on the water to attempt racing in the building 25 mph wind gusts on Sunday. The result was both multihulls and one Thistle completed a race before racing was concluded by the Race Committee. The awards presentation followed. Racing was challenging with wind direction and pressure changes throughout Saturday. The racing was especially competitive for Flying Scot crews where the outcome was uncertain until completion of the final race. Winners in the Thistle, Multihull and Monohull classes completed the event with a string of 1st place finishes. After the awards, skippers and crews packed up to travel home, some traveling from outside the Tri-Cities area and as far away as Seattle, WA and Idaho.
